The session will give a brief overview of the historical threat of patents to Open, how that threat has been addressed in the past, and where gaps still remain. The session will then give case studies where specific examples of threats to Open have been fought. Suggestions for how to continue to fight and win against these threats will be given.

Bio

Keith Bergelt is the CEO of Open Invention Network (OIN), the largest patent non-aggression community in history, created to support freedom of action in Linux and adjacent open source technologies. Funded by Google, IBM/Red Hat, NEC, Philips, Sony, SUSE and Toyota, OIN has nearly 4,000 community members.

Having previously led two hedge funds, served as a technology advisor for Texas Pacific Group, headed business development, IP, and licensing for the Kelso & Company portfolio company Cambridge Display, and acted as General Manager of the Strategic Intellectual Asset Management business unit at Motorola, he is a frequent speaker on corporate strategy, finance and intellectual property management.
