John Murphy

John Murphy is an archaeologist and currently serves as Project Development Lead with the Department for Communities. Since joining the Department in 2011, he has worked primarily within the Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland, where he has worked extensively in GIS, archaeological survey, heritage landscape characterisation, and heritage information management.
Before entering the public sector, John worked in commercial archaeology on a wide range of sites across Ireland from 2002 onwards. He holds an MA in Archaeology and Classics from the University of Glasgow, awarded in 2009.
His professional interests focus on the application of open-source technologies to heritage information management, with particular emphasis on improving access to and stewardship of cultural heritage data. Outside of his professional work, John enjoys cycling and music.
