Andrew Bolster

Dr Andrew Bolster is a Recovering Academic and Reluctant R&D Manager who spends his days driving data to make AI work at Black Duck, where he leads Data Science R&D. He trained as an electronics and software engineer at Queen’s, focusing on high performance computing. He then completed a PhD at Liverpool on Trust and Reputation in autonomous underwater systems for the Anglo-French Defence Research Group. Since then he has worked in Affective Computing and Wearable Technologies, building emotional analytics platforms at Sensum, and he sits on the IEEE P7014 Empathic Technology Working Group. He founded Farset Labs, Northern Ireland’s hackerspace, and serves as Treasurer of BSides Belfast. Previously, he was a Director of the Northern Ireland Open Government Network and sat on the Department of Finance’s Open Data Advisory Panel. He still believes in doing the hard boring plumbing, so the sexy innovation is easy.
